YOU ARE LOVED GLOWLIGHT VIGIL
This one of those very rare serious posts that pop up here on The Skinny. I want to start by saying that I have no problem with the concept of suicide. I think it's a person's choice, and I have no business judging them for that choice(with some exceptions, such as abandoning children or responsibility). There are a people who have nothing for which to live, an incredibly low quality of life, or just don't care to fight the daily fight. If they want to end their life, who am I to think any less of them? What I do have a problem with is when people are made to feel they should commit suicide. If that is the decision a person makes, it should be arrived at on ones own, with no motivation from anyone else.
In the past two weeks, there have been suicides by six LGBT teenagers(ages 13,13,15,15,18,19). They have all been attributed to bullying that took place based on their sexuality. While I know bullying is part of life, being cruel to the point where someone takes their own life is not normal, nor is it ok. The fact that it was based on someone's sexuality is even worse. I don't care to debate whether it's choice or nature(I am 100% on the side of nature), it shouldn't matter either way. No one should be made to feel inferior. Unfortunately, I imagine LGBT teens have far fewer places to turn when they need someone to talk to. Thankfully awareness is being raised and groups are coming forward to offer the support that all people need.
There was a vigil, the "You Are Loved Glowlight Vigil," held this past Sunday in New York City's Washington Square Park to remember those who recently committed suicide. It was meant not only to honor those who died at the hands of bullies, but also to help raise awareness that their are people who can help and that there are people out there fighting to make things better. One of my favorite bloggers was there and put together this video from the occasion.
