Continuing on my journey of foreign lands today brings me to this awesome clip of a Thai boxing match. I am just going to assume that this is some WWE version of Thai boxing because otherwise this is pretty ridiculous. No, I'm not even talking about the fact that one guy brings trash can lids into the ring; I picture that happening all the time. What offends my competitive sensibilities is the easy with which each of them gets through a couple knock down shots. If Tony Jaa has taught me anything, it's that these people are very good at defense. No way multiple haymakers get through in that short of a time span.
This reminds me of another thing that has been pissing me off for years. In fight scenes where it's a group of people against one or just a few, the bad guys always get knocked out of the fight way too easily. I haven't been in that many fights in my day, but I am pretty sure that a sweep kick won't cause me to writhe around on the ground for the remainder of the brawl. It really takes all of the enjoyment out of watching a fight knowing that one big punch and the guy is going to be down for good. The numbers just aren't as impressive when that's the case. I think that's why I like the movie The Protector with Tony Jaa so much. While the sheer volume of ass-kicking was a bit absurd, at least the pile of henchman was believable because they couldn't keep fighting. Be sure to watch this with sound because the bones breaking is what really sells it for me.
